Good to hear from Liz Truss. She wants to abolish UK Supreme Court because held Rwanda was not safe country. Court of Appeal took same view so they presumably should also be abolished. Presumably underlying principle is courts that find against government should be abolished.

Yesterday she wanted to abolish the Supreme Court, today it’s the Judicial Appointments Commission so the politicians can appoint all the judges. Imagine what would mean if you had a PM like Liz Truss. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/04/1…

Truss wants to abolish Supreme Court , Mordaunt and Badenoch object to banning smoking, PM wants to spend £500m on sending 200 people to Rwanda. Leaders of govt over last 2 yrs. Difficult to imagine any institution except Tory Party they would have a job.

Government can without damage to its position or of our allies describe in parl basis on which continued supply of arms to Israel does not breach international humanitarian law. Policy of not supplying arms if breaks IHL pointless if not explained. theguardian.com/politics/artic…

The queue to get into the Rolls Building today - the Commercial/Chancery Court’s building in London. Notice anything about the most popular gender and ethnicity?

BBC correspondent covering the trial said Trump looked defeated and tired as the verdict was delivered. Most politicians would not come back from this. No doubt he will say defiant things. But US is a country of law. And the law usually wins.

Charlie Falconer (@lordcfalconer) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The whole republican establishment has piled in behind Trump to attack his conviction, on the basis it’s a political stitch-up. They are playing with fire. Constitutional government cannot survive without a court system whose authority is accepted by the mainstream parties.

Farage and the Tories blame ECHR for low numbers of deportations of immigrants. Completely wrong. ECHR doesn’t stop deportations to safe 3rd countries. The countries do however have to be safe. UK Supreme Court applying UK law said Rwanda was unsafe.

Whoever wins the general election the Commons must surely get a chance to express their view on Assisted Dying, and if it is yes then the government should make time for the Bill to go through. theguardian.com/society/articl…

Brilliant appointment. Serious decent highly respected lawyer of diamond quality and great values. He has already underlined commitment to rule of law. And the new PM reiterated that commitment in his first press conference. Election brings transformation.

Thank you to everyone who has already got in touch. I’m in the process of setting up my office so responses will be slower than I’d like for now. Until I have an official email I’m available for urgent issues on [email protected]

A transformative appointment for Justice. Shabana gets things done. She will provide leadership strength and commitment for a justice system which has been wrecked by the last 14 years.

Appointing James Timpson, long term prison reformer; and highlighting the mess prisons are in at his first press conference signals straight away the bidding war in bigger sentences is over. Judicial sentencers will notice. theguardian.com/politics/artic…

In the first 36 hours PM has appointed a resolute defender of the rule of law as AG, and brought an end to mindlessly increasing the prison population. A transformative start.

I delivered my maiden speech in parliament today and was proud to say a little about my return to Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the beautiful city on a hill that I represent: Lincoln.

Today I introduced into the Lords a Bill To Assist Adults Who Are Terminally Ill To End Their Lives, Subject To Safeguards. I hope a similar Bill will come through the Commons’ Private Members Bill process after their ballot on the 5/9/24. This is a reform whose time has come.

Lord Lane LCJ is vitriolic about the one he knows best (Donaldson a fellow judge), dismissive about the one he knows next best (Havers), and most wants the one he hardly knows (Howe). Familiarity breeds contempt.
