Our Community Education Officer, Bernadette Galvez, and Ladder Co. 2 spent some time today visiting the 4K students at Lussier Family YMCA West! It was a great day to get out and tour the fire truck while learning about fire safety!

Today we congratulate Paul Poker on his promotion to Lieutenant! Lt. Poker will start as a roving Lieutenant, serving at different stations throughout the city, on the 'A' shift. Congratulations!

Lori Kneebone-Karst had no idea women could be career firefighters— until she met a woman already doing it. She set out to be visible ever since.

Today was testing day for Class 61, but some of the did not need to take the test because they already have their certification. Those recruits took part in a community day of service instead! They helped the East Madison Community Center paint classrooms and organize storage.

Lt. Carri Holloway is celebrating her final day in the fire station today. Holloway joined MFD in October 2007. She's been a familiar face in Station 5's east-side territory for the past 10 years.

Starting today, three CARES teams are on duty during hours of peak demand. CARES 3 is on duty from 12:00-10:00 PM weekdays. Dane County Public Safety Comms Center data identified these as the busiest hours for behavioral health emergencies.

Firefighter Jonathan Koehler and Engine 11's crew were out pumping yesterday. FF Koehler is training for his Acting Apparatus Engineer check-off. He was assisted by Lt. Sue Juedes and Firefighter Matt Farmer.

Women's History @ MFD: Debra Amesqua was the first and only woman to date to become Fire Chief. She oversaw the opening of two new fire stations and the addition of several fire/EMS companies. Her achievements have had a lasting impact on MFD & our community! #WomensHistoryMonth

Today we celebrate Asst Chief Tracy Burrus, who retires after 22 years of dedicated service. Burrus joined MFD in Oct 2001. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2014, to Division Chief in 2016, and to Assistant Chief in 2017. Please join us in wishing her all the best in retirement!

Women’s History @ MFD: Laura Laurenzi joined MFD in 1988. She was the first woman to achieve the rank of Assistant Chief, in 2013. She helped shepherd the development of our Community Paramedicine program, which has gone on to make a widespread positive impact in our community.

Women’s History @ MFD: Cheryl Peterson joined MFD in 1990 as the first civilian and first female Code Enforcement Officer. She eventually worked her way up to the position of Lead Worker in 1994. Cheryl retired 2014, after 23 years with the MFD and 29 years serving the City.

Women’s History @ MFD: Kat Jackson was the first African-American woman ever hired to MFD. She most enjoyed working at Station 6, serving the neighborhood where she lived and owned a business.

We salute FF (Ret.) Jackson for opening the door for Black women at the MFD!

Our Fire & EMS Pathway Internship is a brand new initiative funded by the Wisconsin Partnership Program!

This is a two-year program where interns will get on-the-job training and experiential shadowing at MFD, plus education at Madison College.

This week, Ladder 2 assisted Firefighter Schmid with some ladder basket training. Over the years, ladder basket rescues have helped with rescuing injured construction workers and others who've needed to be removed from differing terrain and heights.
