The Pitt women's volleyball team is the best team at our university right now, ranked #8 in the nation and they just beat #2 Louisville yesterday. I love the way the players dance after the game. Joy!

Here’s my blurb for Manuel Covo’s new book about Haiti, *Entrepôt of Revolution*: 'This smart, sophisticated, deeply researched, and gracefully written book establishes its author as a leading historian of the French Atlantic.'

Review of *Under the Banner of King Death*, which shows “how much more you and me and every Starbucks worker has in common with these pirates than with the so-called legitimate sea captains, who will whip and lash you 'til the profit's in the black.”

In 1994 we established at U of Pittsburgh the E.P. Thompson Memorial Lecture. Christopher Hill gave the first lecture, then came Natalie Zemon Davis, Eric Hobsbawm, Robin Kelley, and others. This year, it’s Barbara Weinstein. Join us in person or remotely!

Teaching tip, : I’ve had success combining Natalie Zemon Davis *The Return of Martin Guerre* (1982) with the award-winning film of the same name (1982; Davis consulted). Literary/film representations of the life of peasants in 16c France.

The research on pirates is better than it has ever been, but here’s how you know the subject has arrived: the literary scholar Steven W. Thomas has now offered a Deleuzian/Guattarian interpretation of pirate literature. I love it!

At Friends’ House in London what was once the William Penn Room is now the Benjamin Lay room. An enslaver removed; an abolitionist honored. Retrospective justice! Makes me happy.

Running into an old friend .... At the founding meeting of the Manhattan Anti-Slavery Society in September 1840, the first speaker was Isaac Hopper, who told the 200 assembled people, “mostly of the working classes,” Black and white, all about radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay.
