Grow & retain your own canola seed? Here’s the key take home messages from the GRDC North project to improve production of grower retained seed. If you missed the webinar, see link below 👍.
Here’s the results from the intercropping/companion project. Take home message was intercropping increased productivity from a unit of land perspective, but profitability was halved compared to wheat monoculture. See below for results GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
Using a combination of irrigation, evaporation covers and sowing times to evaluate canola est% under various soil temp and moisture conditions. Just one of the trials in the new GRDC project being lead by Andrew_Fletcher. Stay tuned for updates. NSW DPI Agronomy CSIRO
Highly recommend this webinar if you grow and retain your own canola seed, and seek to ensure your seed-block is best managed to maximise seed vigour, reduce seed abnormalities and improve next years canola establishment. GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
Plan on grading (seed sizing) canola seed for next year? As a guide - here’s some seed size distribution results across 3 sites from CNSW, & the total seed required to keep 1t of seed for a given seed size (for next years sowing) GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
Ever wondered why you DONT apply glyphosate (as a harvest aid and/or late weed ctrl) to canola seed-crops? Next years crop establishment will be greatly reduced no matter how big the seed size is. #cantgradeyourselfoutoftrouble GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
Tolerances for retaining weather damaged canola seed is extremely small. Any visual symptoms is likely to produce seed with low vigor (& hence poor establishment for next year). Conduct a seed vigor test if you have any doubt. GRDC North NSW DPI Agronomy
