What about the 50% of Christians Against Poverty (CAP) UK clients who have deficit budgets - can they just issue a press release saying they need more income in order to survive? Hmm…. I wonder….

I’m torn. It’s good it’s been extended - people will have been left stranded in impossible circumstances without it. But I won’t be happy as long as we are helping people in these situations with short term fix by short term fix. We shouldn’t need a household support fund.

Years of eroding social security and social housing means the state now spends £1bn each year on emergency household support and £1bn on temporary housing for the homeless. Those are the narrow direct fiscal costs. The economic costs much larger. The human costs incalculable.

DWP have just (4pm on a Friday afternoon!) published figures showing that weekly claims for Pension Credit have roughly doubled since the Winter Fuel Payment policy was announced. However, this level of activity would need to last for four *years* to reach all those missing out!
