1/4 The Chancellor of Justice Tuomas Pöysti met today with Mr Michael O’Flaherty, Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). Mr Adriano Silvestri, Head of Sector for Migration and Asylum in Justice and Mr Juho Lehtimäki, Referendary Counsellor participated.

4/4 EU-wide cooperation is needed to secure effective application of the fundamental rights and human rights in the context of European war and crises including hybrid threats.

3/4 The CoJ underlined that the new emergency provisions in the Act require strict necessity in their application. The Act requires respect of the international human rights and fundamental rights obligations. Application by the Government is closely supervised by the CoJ.

2/4 Discussions concerned the recent amendments to Finland’s Border Guard Act and how the fundamental rights and human rights and respect of the principle of non-refoulement are guaranteed in the application of the Act.
