This last year has seen largest La Nina/El Nino transition in decades. That's lead to an unusually large natural annual CO2 increment.

Human-generated CO2 emissions on the other hand have likely reached their peak (see Carbon Brief: carbonbrief.org/analysis-globa…)

With very few exceptions, the models now point to a very substantial La Nina (cooling tropical Pacific, w/ a cooling impact on global mean surface temperature) in the months ahead: iri.columbia.edu/our-expertise/…

“Defeatism is as much of a threat as climate denial”

I interviewed climate scientist, Prof Michael E. Mann about net zero, lessons from the earth’s history and why US leadership is essential for climate action.

“I’m confident we’re on a better trajectory than we were ten years ago, when we were looking at potentially as much as 4°C warming of the planet – truly devastating, potentially civilisation-ending amounts of warming.”

Prof. Mann is right: the formula for communicating about climate action is not doomerism, it's urgency + *agency.* 'The obstacles to keeping warming below 1.5°C – as yet – are not physical or technological. They remain political – and political obstacles can be overcome.'

For all the Brits (!), I'll be talking about with former Environment Minister of Wales, Jane Davidson (Jane Davidson) on the Discovery Stage at the @HayFestival, Friday May 24!

“If every country meets its commitments under the Cop26 agreement, and does so on time, it could limit warming to 2°C.”

.Prof Michael E. Mann: 'As the impacts of climate change become ever more obvious, it’s very difficult to credibly deny the problem. So, polluters have instead turned to other tactics in their efforts to block action.' newstatesman.com/spotlight/sust…

As Prof Michael E. Mann once told Salon, climate change deniers 'pollute the social media discourse on climate change and environmental sustainability.'

I fear that this is why public concern about global warming is declining....

'good people. on both sides'

If it looks like a Nazi, swims like a Nazi, and quacks like a Nazi, then it probably is a Nazi.

Michael’s “point all along”, as he puts it in a reply, being that if we over-stress the recent El Niño ocean warming, then as temperatures fall due to the cyclic switch to La Niña, the climate change deniers will deploy earlier media inflammation to try to discredit real science.
