R.I.P. Mike Davis, one of the most important Marxist thinkers of the last 40 years, and an incredible writer and synthesizer. Each in its own way, his books—City of Quartz, Late Victorian Holocausts—were transformative reads. We needed him for the future, if there is to be one.

After the Trojan Horse scandal revelations and the role of Michael Gove in legitimising Islamophobia, he should never have been allowed in public office again.

But we all know Islamophobia is rewarded, not reprimanded.

The only people who ever benefit from respectability politics are the bosses and the ruling class, it’s a dangerous dead end for the working class

Social conservatism (so beloved of Blue Labour) is based on a one dimensional view of the working class as being subservient & obedient - to the flag, the nation & militarism. It’s a pessimism borne of the focus group. Socialism should always be more ambitious than that.
