4 Sept 1657: Robert Blake, General-at-Sea buried #otd against his wishes in the Henry VII chapel of #Westminster Abbey. He was prescient as they threw his remains out at the Restoration. (NMM, 17thc portrait and an 1829 reworking)

📅#OTD 1643, #Gloucester. The Siege of Gloucester ends after 26 days when the royalist besiegers withdraw in the face of a parliamentarian relief force. Part of the town's old south gate is preserved in The Folk of Gloucester (no longer on X) museum.

📅#OTD 1649. Walter Strickland writes home to the English Commonwealth. He begrudgingly warns that the royalist Marquis of Montrose has a ship laden with arms for a rising in Scotland. Deeming the Scots 'soe excessively my ennimyes' he considers it a high charity to warn them.
