Antarctica has been exceptionally warm, and scientists may be seeing some of the effects. The Wilkins Ice Shelf had been historically stable, but scientists have noticed recent signs of structural weaknesses, potentially signaling a shift in the shelf’s stability.

Less sea ice coverage allows the ocean to warm the atmosphere over the poles, leading to more ice melting. Scientists have connected declining Arctic sea ice to human-caused climate change, however the cause of low Antarctic sea ice is still being investigated.
