A British botanist and geologist, a mentor and friend of Charles Darwin who inspired Darwin to study natural history. When he was offered a place on the HMS Beagle he declined the offer, but instead suggested Darwin in his place.
This species of hoverfly collected in Shropshire #OnThisDay in 2011 used to only be found in Scotland.
That is until 2011, when it was found further south on different species of conifer trees 🌲

This specimen of #Asterales Phyteuma orbiculare was found in chalk pastures at #Stonehenge on the 14th June 1932
