Sheila Oliver was the pride and joy of Essex County. She was a daughter of Newark – the city where she was born and raised.
 
Today, the Lieutenant Governor lies in state in the city that inspired her dedication to public service.

Today, we honor the best partner in government I could ever dream of.

As Sheila took her oath of office as Lieutenant Governor, she said, “We make history not in the moment, but in what we do with it.”

And she did just that. Time and time again.

Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver was a friend to many and an incredible role model for women, including myself.

Her memory and impact will live on through those she mentored, like @ASWTimberlake, Tai Cooper, and Shante Palmer.

As we commemorate the life of Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, I have decided to commission an official State portrait of Sheila — an honor that, until now, has only been reserved for former governors. 
 
This portrait will be displayed in the halls of the State House as a testament to her legacy.

Prior to the funeral, Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver will lie in state in the Rotunda of the State Capitol and at the Essex County Courthouse. These viewings will be open to the public. 

Together, we will honor and celebrate her remarkable contributions to the state she loved.

The official New Jersey State Funeral and Memorial Service for Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on Saturday, August 12.

Members of the public are invited to attend to pay their respects.

Today, I am ordering that U.S. and New Jersey flags fly at half-staff for the next month as we mourn the loss of Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver.

History will remember LG Oliver as a trailblazer. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the Oliver family and all who knew and loved her.
