I’m in the chemo clinic watching Rishi Sunak become the first person of colour to be PM. For a 1st generation migrant like me, born in Sri Lanka, it is a moment of great pride to live in a European country where this is possible. Racism is not over, but we’re on the right path.

Y'know, it's funny. There was no such front page in 2007 when Brown became PM without a vote (no GE til 2010) or in 2014 when Nicola Sturgeon became FM without a vote (no Scottish elex til 2016)

Italy has its first female PM in history. Raised in the outskirts of Rome, working class, without a father. She didn’t attend University, instead she worked night shifts as a waitress. If she had been a progressive, the press would have placed her on every magazine cover.

No matter your views on Rishi Sunak’s politics, this is a moment that would have been unimaginable 75 years ago as India became independent from British colonial rule… and frankly would’ve felt unimaginable to me growing up

400 days since the Taliban banned young girls from going to school in Afghanistan - the ONLY country in the world to imprison its girls at home and ban them from recieving an education.

Education is a basic human right.

Consider for a moment the courage and resilience required to lead a political party in Britain, and even more so to be PM. Could you do it? These people endure unbelievable pressure and appalling abuse, no matter where they are on the political spectrum. We owe them a great deal.

They are not citizens any longer.

The women of Afghanistan are facing an extreme gender apartheid.

Girls are banned from school, women are forced to cover up, restricted from working & travelling and girls as young as 9 are married off. Women are treated worse than second class citizens.

Reports that the Taliban have issued passports to more than 3,000 members of 'terrorist groups'are extremely distressing.

So far thousands of terrorist prisoners have been released, suicide attack units formed & dramatic increase in Islamist schools (madrasas) in Afghanistan.
