The 2024 mid-August grasslands around Canberra are looking greener than previous years (compared to: 2019 - drought; 2023 - La NiƱa). The grass pollen season wonā€™t start for about another 6 weeks, but all signs point to an early and above average grass hay fever season.

Turns out vegetation greeness is a good predictor of the onset and strength of the grass pollen season (derived from satellite images of Normalised Difference Vegetation Index -NDVI) in our recent study. sciencedirect.com/science/articlā€¦

This is the time of year for tree pollen to be produced in abundance around the Canberra region. Cypress pine and Pinus sp. pollen seasons begin in late July and mid August, respectively. Some people experience hay fever as a result of high pollen counts in the air at this time

Pollen update - the last day of winter. The Pollen Gods (yes they exist!) have been raining havoc across Canberra as winter comes to a close and spring is almost here. Pine (Pinus sp.) pollen is abundant as we see a ā€œsecondary bumpā€ in the cumulative Tree Pollen count this week

The Tree Pollen daily count has been tracking at around average levels this year as a mix of wet weather has temporarily dampened the airborne count and windy days have elevated it.

A series of other tree pollen types (incl. Poplars, Birch, Elms, Oaks, Willows, and Plane trees) will start to produce pollen in September and October, adding to the diversity of allergenic pollen types in the air we breathe. Stay tuned for more updates canberrapollen.com.au

Happy National Wattle Day. Celebrating the first day of spring.. and remember, donā€™t blame the wattle for your sneezing and wheezing at this time of year (itā€™s likely to be wind blown tree pollen from other tree species thatā€™s causing your hay fever symptoms) Wattle Day Association Inc

The Poplar trees (Populus spp.) of Canberra have started to produce abundant pollen during the first week of spring. This is a little earlier than we observed in 2020-2023. Poplar trees produce abundant airborne pollen that can cause allergies in some people for up to 6 weeks.

One of the biological functions of Poplar tree pollination is to allow for the Poplar catkins to produce seeds. These seeds are famous around Canberra as some of our Poplar trees produce abundant "fluff" in October just in time for exams! Learn more here: fennerschool.anu.edu.au/news-events/neā€¦
