In a last-minute blow to the , EU Commission's draft directive on Nitrates disregards impact assessment and science. Allowing tweaked manure above legal thresholds jeopardises water protection.
This is not progress; it's a massive step away from a water-resilient EU💧

Good to see the FAO's sham livestock emissions report scrutinised. Unpopular as the truth may be, dietary change towards less/better meat has the potential to deliver *significant* GHG savings from the food system, as part of a wider packet of reform.

You can't play on the pitch and commentate on the match.

Yet this is exactly what big food companies do - marking their own homework when it comes to their (extremely weak) self-made rules on marketing unhealthy food to kids.

But when you see what they deem 'compliant'... 🧵👇

I think the funniest part of this is that member stated have to 'ensure living plant cover' because of 'increase risk of nitrogen loss in water and air' - that's one of the CAP conditionality rules they JUST killed. Well done guys, perfect coherence 👏

Reducing the pig herd, especially as pig meat prices have plummeted because *we produce far too much* would the logical next step, but I guess destroying more environmental regulations is easier... 🤷‍♀️

To be really clear on this: this not pushed by the need of EU farmers to have more fertiliser sources, this is pushed by the absolute overflow of pig shit in countries who don't have enough surfaces to dump it (= the Netherlands). 💩

This week, the 🇪🇺Court of Auditors flagged blind spots in the Transparency Register. It echoes the European Ombudsman's recent conclusion that the Register mismanaged our complaint about opaque lobbying practices vs Nutri-Score. Time to make this tool reliable: twitter.com/beuc/status/17…

We sent an open letter to call for an immediate retraction & correction. We documented *several pages* of FAO's errors, all of which serve to shrink the beneficial emissions savings of shifting to plant-rich diets. The real benefits are ~6 to 40x larger! universiteitleiden.nl/en/science/env…

The Food and Agriculture Organization misused my research to publish findings with a pro-meat bias ⚠️

The organization has been outdoing itself to distort the impacts of dietary change on the environment 🧵 theguardian.com/environment/20…

(Doit-on appeler ça pâturage?)

… but sadly a disappointing reply by Nestlé. As usual putting the burden on consumers to “make healthy choices” (yet that’s a tough challenge when the *unhealthy* choice is the most available, advertised, and is often the cheapest option too!)

That’s exactly what we mean when we call for healthier . Making the healthy choice the easy, default option (available, attractive, affordable).

For the green transition to happen, we need lifestyle changes, not only of the elite, but of a critical mass of consumers. That calls for an ambitious policy to help consumers embrace the transition, our director monique goyens just said at the 🧵

Interesting … Yet which MEPs replied honestly (daring to disagree on some points) vs. gave expected replies w/ elections in mind? Do all S&D Group agree w/ replies by Juozas Olekas 🇪🇺? And all Renew Europe with the ones by Jérémy DECERLE & Dacian Cioloş? EU citizens should know.

We can’t simply inform them: we need to make it the attractive, affordable and easy choice by default!
