Finally, louis appleby mentioned the 2023 Suicide Prevention Strategy & reiterated the key message: anyone can be at risk and everyone has a part to play. People’s lives are complex and clinical care should reflect this complexity. Our job is to be constantly vigilant #NCISH2024
.louis appleby discussed suicide prevention in the cost of living crisis. Economic hardship is dangerous for mental health patients and frontline services should be aware and work alongside agencies providing economic support #NCISH2024
3,894 patients died in public locations over the report period. The use of parks/woodlands increased over the report period, particularly in people aged under 25. Local suicide prevention plans should address high risk locations #NCISH2024
Between 2016-2021, there were an average of 167 patient deaths/year in those who had received a one-off assessment. Many had experienced recent adverse life events but were not offered further treatment. Awareness of risk and care is needed when considering discharge #NCISH2024
.louis appleby also presented data on students who died by suicide. Fewer were under mental heath care than other patients but had a higher prevalence of depression. Deaths were more common in October, when students first arrive at university, and in April during exams #NCISH2024
Between 2011-2021, there was an average of 11 deaths/year in in-patients aged under 25. Many were placed in units away from family and friends and more died on the ward than older in-patients. Suicide prevention for this group should be mindful of these characteristics #NCISH2024
.louis appleby presented data on autistic people and those with ADHD who died by suicide. The number of patients who died by suicide in this group has increased over time, likely a reflection of an increase in clinical recognition and diagnoses of these disorders #NCISH2024
.louis appleby said that ethnic minorities are not one group & services must take local ethnicity into account. Read our The Lancet Psychiatry paper which concludes that ‘Effective approaches to prevention might differ between minority ethnic groups’ thelancet.com/journals/lanps… #NCISH2024
