Last weekend, I unofficially became the 52nd Black American to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology. I am incredibly grateful to my support network over these past 6 years!

This is just too sweet not to share: Lidia's father was unable to make the trip from Peru for her wedding, so Lidia asked if Courtney, her PhD advisor, who she also considers her second mom, would dance with her instead. How lucky are we to have an advisor like Courtney 💕

I’m very excited to share the new TAMS paper that has just been published in GMD! Zachary Moon and I describe the open-source package &, among other details, examples of how to go about analyzing tracked MCSs. ⛈️ We hope TAMS is helpful for your research! doi.org/10.5194/gmd-17…

Another incredible jump right into the ocean! It is the eye of Typhoon Ampil 🌀 which headed eastward out into the Pacific after raising alerts in Tokyo & N. Japan 🇯🇵 #Copernicus #Sentinel2 🛰️ 2024-08-16. Do not miss the static image in comments. HD: youtu.be/w1QX2I1obWI 🧐

I've updated my objective African easterly wave reanalysis tracks. I now have tracks through 2023 for both ERA5 and MERRA-2 data; months June - October. I now specifically save the AEW strength and TC genesis data in the NC files. Check it out! doi.org/10.5281/zenodo…

Since I may not be able to keep up my live GFS tracking indefinitely, I'm happy to work with anyone with operational weather websites who'd like to implement this (with credit). If you're already ingesting model data, it should be fairly easy to incorporate into your workflow!

I’m so thrilled to see this work published. It started as an idea in grad school, continued as my proposal for my post doc, and here we are finally publishing it! 😃

What's happening in the current Atlantic hurricane season aligns with my recent study, where we found that a wet monsoon & a northward-shifted AEJ-AEW system reduce and delay TC genesis. Check out the physical mechanisms in our paper: doi.org/10.1029/2023MS….

Some motivation to read through your old code: for years I thought my wave tracker didn't work well in the East Pacific. But after fixing a line in the code yesterday, I realized it does work! After QC, I'll update the historical tracks and the python module. Stay tuned!

FYI: The computer at UMiami running my AEW tracker is offline for maintenance and I don't know when it'll be online. So unfortunately the GFS tracks aren't updating at the moment.

Computer is now back online as of today's (9/3) 12Z GFS run! qlawton.rsmas.miami.edu Trends will take about a day or so to fill in.

African easterly wave tracks in GFS before my computer went down (August 30th, 6z run) versus afterwards (today 12z run). 🤷‍♂️
