En el Royal Opera House, Londres, el 26 de abril de 1951 se estrena 'The Pilgrim's Progress', ópera en cuatro actos con prólogo y epílogo, de Ralph Vaughan-Williams. La interpretación fue dirigida por Leonard Hancock, a quien el compositor escogió personalmente, y fue un fracaso.

La composición de 'The Pilgrim's Progress' coincidió con la de la Sinfonía No. 5 de Vaughan-Williams, por lo que se percibe que la obra orquestal tiene temas que toca la ópera. Como particularidad, Vaughan-Williams propone 41 roles interpretativos distintos en la ópera.

La composición de la Sinfonía No. 6 fue emprendida por Vaughan-Williams entre 1944 y 1947, en el tiempo que abarca el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y poco después del conflicto, y lo que condiciona un poco su melancolía interna. La estructura se presenta en cuatro movimientos.

En el Royal Albert Hall, Londres, el 21 de abril de 1948 se estrena la Sinfonía No. 6 en Mi menor, de Ralph Vaughan-Williams. La interpretación fue dirigida por sir Adrian Boult ante la BBC Symphony Orchestra con éxito tremendo: en un año la obra se repitió unas 100 veces más.
