This is June on the coastal Karst close to the town of Trieste, elevation 276 m asl. Same location in the continuous 58 years record. 2024 monthly temperature mean is in line with recent climatology but definitely warmer than the 1960s to 1990s period

Epic view of Coronation Island, the largest in the South Orkney (Antarctica), hit by powerful north wind in late January 2015. Orography and fluid dynamics explain everything 😉 View from Signy island.

It is not the same point of view, but a very useful picture of Edoardo Tellini (SAF archive) from early Sep 1881 confirms our Canin East glacier reconstruction. Look at the nice right-lateral moraine we mapped on the field to build the old glacier geometry and thickness.

Even at full Summer the karstic landscape is able to create extreme microclimate conditions in frost hollows as here in the Julian Alps. -1.1°C detected last night in a large depression in the slovenian mountains.

A storm in effect is heading towards Svalbard now at about 74°North. I've rarely seen lightnings so far North in the Atlantic. In the afternoon heavy downpurs, and horizontal wind gusta due to a downburst have been reported in Tromsø.

Spectacular icefall of one of the most scenic glaciers we have surveyed a couple of days ago in the Aqqutikitsoq mountains. Knowledge of glacier evolution and dynamics in this coastal area of West Greenland is still rather poor.

The last 11 days are still missing but on August 20th 2024, this Summer remains one of the hottest ever recorded since (at least) the early 1800s in the coastal Karst area. Temperature anomaly is +2.9, larger than one st. dev. from the 1971-2000 climatology.

2021... 2022... 2023... Looking forward to the 2024 geodetic mass balance of such a small glacier remnant in the Julian Alps... waiting for the very likely and close inevitability
