We need practical solutions to support species of conservation concern before they’re listed under the Endangered Species Act. This week, I met with CEHMM in Carlsbad to see firsthand the success of their habitat programs with private landowners.

Alamo Mountain in Otero Mesa is a special place in our district, and yesterday I spent time on the mountain with the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and Mescalero Apache Tribal leaders to discuss the future of these special grasslands.

They not only helped defeat an enemy on the battlefield, during World War II, but protected a sacred language and culture. We will never forget their contributions and sacrifice. We owe an incredible debt of gratitude to these heroes on National Navajo Code Talkers Day.
