A few thoughts on this from a historian of slavery in Guyana, FWIW.

Part of the problem w/ this language is how a 21st cent. reader understands 'manager' or 'management'--terms too easily stripped of their brutality and context.

(BTW, same problem w/ plantation 'attorney')

In a v brief note about their past financial backing from a family who made their money from enslaving people in Guyana, they refer to them as having β€œmanaged nearly 200 enslaved people.” This shows how the varnishing of slavery happens even within β€œaccountability” statements.

Hi The Booker Prizes, I really appreciate the transparency. The enslaved African people referenced are my family.

Josias & George did not 'manage' my family. They enslaved them. Thats why we STILL have their last name. They were enslavers, not 'managers'.

So there are real cowboys among us - what do you mean you tried to stop a horse that’s running at top speed?
