A few thoughts on this from a historian of slavery in Guyana, FWIW.

Part of the problem w/ this language is how a 21st cent. reader understands 'manager' or 'management'--terms too easily stripped of their brutality and context.

(BTW, same problem w/ plantation 'attorney')

In a v brief note about their past financial backing from a family who made their money from enslaving people in Guyana, they refer to them as having “managed nearly 200 enslaved people.” This shows how the varnishing of slavery happens even within “accountability” statements.
