My statement on the UT campus protests.

We are not supposed to be a country that arrests students for speaking their mind and journalists for covering the news.

This is un-American and violates the First Amendment.

Colleges are a place of expression and dialogue. Arresting them will not silence them.

The videos coming out of UT are shocking—peaceful student protestors being violently arrested and brutalized by DPS state troopers in riot gear. This is unacceptable. Freedom must include the ability to peacefully protest, regardless of viewpoint.

As a Texas Ex, I’m extremely disappointed in the leadership of Jay Hartzell. UT Austin has had vigorous and robust protests for decades without this type of police response. The disrespect of students’ constitutional rights is absolutely unacceptable.
