Yesterday, our Assatta Mann took the streets of Newark alongside other community leaders to express outrage and grief over Sonya Massey’s death. As we're tragically reminded far too often, New Jersey is not immune police violence.

60 years ago, Fannie Lou Hamer took America to task for failing to support voting rights for Black people. "All of this is on account we want to register, to become first-class citizens... I question America, is this America?"

This afternoon, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way signed into law A2280/S1311, legislation to combat racial discrimination in home appraisals and require real estate appraisers to complete anti-bias training.

We’ve heard the stories before. A Black homeowner gets a home appraised and, suspecting it’s been undervalued, has a white person stand it for another appraisal – only to get a higher valuation. nytimes.com/2024/03/25/rea…

In combination with an Attorney General directive also aimed at combatting appraisal discrimination, this new law will bring us closer to a more equitable New Jersey, and will be felt in a real, concrete way.

Today I signed legislation explicitly prohibiting discriminatory practices in real estate appraisals — a form of bias that contributes to the racial wealth gap.   Property owners now have multiple avenues to seek remedies for home appraisal discrimination.

A big win for NJ homeowners who are fighting to combat racial discrimination and discriminatory appraisals! It is required that real estate appraisers complete anti-bias training!
