Celebrating Renter’s Day!!! We heard from tenants, CM’s Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez Councilmember Nithya Raman Hugo Soto-Martínez and are headed to make public comment! #KeepLaHoused
Public comment is finally starting! Sadly, many tenants and community members who waited to give comment had to leave because they had to go back to work. LA City Council we need you to do better, we refuse to be silenced!
Hundreds of tenants are gathered on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall on Renters’ Day to say, we demand housing for everyone!
KEEP LA HOUSED! #rentersday #KeepLAHoused
This morning we’re at City Hall saying YES to rent debt forgiveness, YES to stronger rent control, and YES to social housing. 🏡✊🏽 #CommunityPower #RentersDay2024
✊We’re out in front of LA City Council for the Renters’ Day Rally! Come give public comment in support of strong tenant protections including rent control and a codified Right to Counsel!

The good news: Mayor Karen Bass is including #MansionTax funding in the city budget.
The bad news: it’s not enough.
We built a tool to tell City Council why we need to do more to spend the over $200 million we’ve raised to help renters and seniors stay in their homes.
In this @LAtimes article, #TenantAdvocates from Strategic Actions for a Just Economy reflect on the recent findings from #UCLALuskin which reports that nearly 4 in 10 renters in LA County worry about facing #Eviction and losing their home. Evictions have returned to pre-pandemic levels w/ 71,429 notices filed with the Housing Dept between Feb-Nov 2023. The overwhelming majority were filed for nonpayment of rent. A USGAO study found that a $100 median rent increase was associated with a 9% increase in homelessness.
Somos Familia Valle Tenants Together Social Eco Education Coal for Eco Surv LAANE LTSC Reclaim Our Schools LA LA CAN United Teachers Los Angeles AAPI Equity Alliance Rent increases compound every year (this year’s increase is based on last year’s rent) so these small numbers really add up. If landlords were allowed to raise rent 8% every year (the current LARSO max), then rent would *double* in 9 years! #LARSO2024

The pandemic made the housing and homelessness crisis worse and tenants have still not recovered. #LARSO2024

That includes family or friends in need and also every new child after the 1st born. Even if the person moves out the raise often isn’t removed. Other cities prohibit this. #LARSO2024

That’s why the currently allowed increase is 4% (just rent) - 6% (+ utilities). #LARSO2024
