Opening that envelope can be a nerve-wracking experience for students, parents and teachers. At one special educational needs school in Belfast, it was smiles all round for three students who received their GCSE results today. Jake Wood reports

37 SEN children still without confirmed school places just 1 week before term starts: - 3 nursery - 18 P1 - 16 Yr8 Each case affects a family & support network, impacting hundreds of lives. These children will be at home while their peers walk through school gates next week.

Always worth keeping in mind that just because a SEND child has been placed and are no longer one of these stats, it does not mean they are in the correct placement to suit their needs. We do not have the specialist placements available to accommodate SEND need.

Delighted to hear Belfast Wide Early Years Pilot had their funding finally confirmed for September. The project delivers the early intervention, collaborative work needed to transform SEND services. Disgraceful they were made to wait so long for confirmation

Another school year begins, but the same issues persist. Many SEN children remain unplaced, while others are stuck in inadequate settings or still waiting for confirmed start dates, many P1 starts postponed until Nov. Meanwhile, EA stats conveniently focus only on “placements.”

My nephew, who has very complex needs, was kept on a bus for two and a half hours on the way to school yesterday while the driver picked up pupils from other schools and dropped them off first, his bus home didn’t show up at all

If Paul Givan would like to take a look at the shambolic start of term, special needs school bus provision, that would be of great help to the children and their parents

SEN Children and Families cannot be left behind. My office has been inundated with complaints from families with SEN Children, who were guaranteed school transport, but have been left without or on a bus for over 2 hours. This situation simply isn’t good enough. 1/2

It's these stories that remind us why delivering transformation of SEN services must remain at the top of the Minister's priority list. This cannot be an annual cycle we accept. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Great to see 'Better support for children and young people with SEN' included as one of the nine priorities in the proposed Programme for Government. Looking forward to seeing NI Executive 's detailed plans for making this a reality
