Really highlights the desperate need for data sharing, transparency, and better coordination during this outbreak.

This we're celebrating a remarkable milestone. New data from World Health Organization (WHO) & The Lancet shows that vaccines have saved 154M lives over the last 50 years thanks to the efforts of countries, partners, and health workers to deliver them worldwide.

hits hard, especially for pregnant women and kids under 5. In sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 3 women face this deadly threat during pregnancy.

1/ No live virus found in pasteurized milk from infected cows.

The Director of NIH's National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases reported that, while researchers could recover genome fragments (which we knew from yesterday), they were unable to culture virus.

Some of the best coverage I’ve seen on the latest H5N1 findings and where we’re at with response- thanks for your diligence and great reporting Sarah Newey!

2/ We already had strong evidence that cow-to-cow transmission was happening. This means we need much wider testing of dairy and beef cattle (including testing of asymptomatic cows) to determine how widespread the infections are. x.com/HelenBranswell…

I plotted the cumulative number of herds for the US as a whole.

Pretty amazing: Steady (but not exponential) growth. Again, a hint of a bent curve toward the present, driven largely by Texas, presumably.

Much too early to make firm conclusions, but perhaps some room for hope.

Great thread by Dr. Sam Scarpino on H5N1 and pasteurization. This is a good reminder of how effective it is, but also why we public health folks aren’t fans of raw milk (sooo many reasons).

The most concerning element of this discovery is that it points towards widespread, undetected circulation in cattle - in keeping with the latest analysis from Michael Worobey, Dr. Angela Rasmussen & co.

Re-upping this bc it’s important to know what these results mean rather than hitting an immediate panic button. Great thread from Dr. Dr. Angela Rasmussen 👇🏻

Very important to note here that qPCR positives are not the same as 'virus particles.' It's much easier to detect viral RNA by qPCR than it is to detect infectious virus or intact virus particles (as the article correctly notes).

This finding does have some big implications:
