Tracked migratory birds are documenting their own deaths along the African-Eurasian flyway.

Energy infrastructure, illegal killing & poisoning to blame, outstripping natural mortality causes in tracked raptors, storks & cranes.

🐷New paper in Nature Food🐷

THE BAD NEWS: overall, we found trade-offs. Farms with lower GHGs had lower land use, but higher antimicrobial use and poorer welfare.

THE GOOD NEWS: trade-offs weren't inevitable. Several farms performed well in all four ways. 1/5

16 years ago, I created a Facebook group 'Birds Bangladesh' just for fun and to exchange birdwatching info, which gradually evolved into nation's largest citizen-science-driven online database for biodiversity. Several papers were published using that dataset; here is how:

Previously, we have tagged 13 Spoon-billed Sandpipers in the breeding and staging grounds, which offered many incredible insights on their migration.
For more information, check out our latest paper with result of previous tracking here: waderstudygroup.org/article/14536/ Graham Appleton

Great stuff Rob! A single Spoonie was reported on 2 May 1996, along the east coast of Luzon, Philippines. In January 2018, there was a claim accompanied by a photo, but it was later rejected and identified as a stint with mud on its bill.

Destruction of an important foraging area for Asian Dowitcher and other shorebirds at Lianyungang has been put on hold by a recent court judgement, a tremendous success led by Friends of Nature.
Yet, still more to do to conserve the site!

The star of the show unfazed. Thrilling to see my first ever spoonie, but also appalling to think there are only 300 or so left on Earth.

Season's Greetings! Exciting news: Spoonie chick X7 leg-flagged in Far East Russia in July 2023 travelled over 8,500 km, reaching Fujian, China by October and Sonadia Island, Bangladesh by late November 2023. Connecting coasts, mudflats, and people along the way!
