For global conferences, the only viable option is to go fully virtual. This appears unattractive, considering that it doesn't allow for fun socials like dancing in the rain in potentially far distant, exciting places. But it is the only sustainable option. twitter.com/nyhabash/statu…

Obviously, global in-person conferences like EMNLP will be impossible then. In-person conferences will have to be limited to regional that are easy to reach by other means of transportation. Note that continental conferences like NAACL are already too big. LA to NYC takes 2 days.

Aviation is responsible for around 5% of global warming. Low-emission air travel won't be widely available until at least the 2040s. If the <2°C warming target is taken seriously, air travel will very likely have to be cut drastically in the 2030s onward.

Glad to see people are having a great time at #EMNLP2022 .

Unfortunately, the reality is that air travel will be unsustainable over the medium term. There will likely be at least a decade when flying will be inaccessible to the masses. We need to think about alternatives now.
