Can you work out what the strange item in this drawing is? It's a pricket candle stick mounted on the back of a quadruped animal, perhaps a deer! The drawing comes from the volume Primeval Antiquities and the inscription reads 'in Bronze in possession of Mr Deck, Cambridge'.

Today's #OnlineArtExchange theme is Egypt for Creatures of the Nile at @victoriagallery (curated by Garstang Museum). We've got this lovely drawing of a jackal from the painted inner surface of the bottom of a mummy case found in Thebes in 1835.

Here we see a Plate from Vetusta Monumenta which shows two works of art depicting the type of Roman gladiator known as a retiarius or net-fighter. Vetusta Monumenta (Ancient Monuments) is a series of 7 volumes of engravings, originally published by the Society between 1747-1906.

The Roll Chronicle is a rare surviving genealogical roll, charting the descent of Henry VI from Adam & Eve. Rolls like this show the desire to be associated with legendary & documented figures of the past but are notoriously imaginative. The detail here shows Alexander the Great.

This drawing from 1802 shows two stained glass windows depicting St Peter & St Paul, from the south east window of the South Chapel adjoining to Hildersham Church. It was done by Thomas Fisher & is one of a number of his drawings we have of his showing decorative church elements.

Happy #MayDay or #Beltane ! Although we don't have anything in our collections that relates directly to May Day, we're using this as an opportunity to celebrate our own May by showcasing this beautiful portrait of May Morris, done by Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1871.

When you're desperately searching the horizon for the bank holiday weekend, but it's only Tuesday. This image actually depicts an aeolipile, or hearth-blower, in the form of a kneeling man. The original object the drawing is based on is a bronze cast, found at Basingstoke.
