Hornet Robberflies on the South Downs near Newhaven yesterday. One of Britain's largest flies (up to 28mm long). Larvae are predators of dung beetle larvae, usually under cow pats and horse dung. Can be surprisingly well camouflaged! Now is the time to look for it.

At long last, and well overdue, I seem to have found a 'first for Britain'. Say hello to the woodlouse Chaetophiloscia elongata. Found from upper saltmarsh / seawall in north Kent in June. Thanks to the good folk on the isopod/myriopod Facebook group for confirming!

Soldierflies RS Thanks for taking a look! We also suspected the spots would appear more obviously large and round for bipunctata, if that's right? Anyway luckily we were able to examine another one more closely, and that definitely looked good for nobilitata. Wonderful to see them.

😱 indeed! Robberflies have some pretty powerful toxins that they inject so perhaps the fly wouldn't have known much about it by that stage.

Never feels right to publicise these evil creatures πŸ˜‰ that are parasitoids of soldierflies, but this is a brilliant photo of them!

Robberflies enjoy landing on your camera hand. Normally any resulting photo is badly out-of-focus, occasionally they stay long enough for decent shot. Tolmerus atricapillus ♀ with Thereva sp. β™‚ prey today in Bengeo garden. BNA – Herts branch #Asilidae #KiteTailedRobberfly #Stilettofly

I went back today to the beautiful wildflower meadow I visited last week, to see if I could find an insect I thought might be a Hornet Robberfly. I managed to find the exact pile of pony dung it was on last week... and Bingo! A male, I think? #Robberflies cc Steven Falk

I've driven aong the M40 through Aston Rowant NNR so many times but today, at last, I actually visited the reserve. Not a lot of insect activity but I did photograph a Hornet Robberfly, a Chalk Hill Blue and a scarce parasite fly called Gymnosoma rotundatum 😊😊😊

As Steven Falk says, this is Scarce Red-legged Robberfly, Dioctria cothurnata, and only the fourth record for Moray, with the previous ones being further south around Grantown and Aviemore - please do send the record in πŸ™

3/x At Dry Sandford Pit, a late female Large Scabious Mining Bee nectaring on the Field Scabious. No attempt at gathering pollen suggesting nest provisioning is over. On Parsnip nearby, the most iconic fly (if not insect) of the area, the soldierfly Stratiomys chamaeleon! 😊😊

Double Entomology! Kite-tailed Robberfly basking on a Marsh Fritillary larval web today (1/3rd of MF webs checked today had gone into hibernation, 1/3rd were thinking about it. No sign of any Cotesia parasites).
