On this day in 1929, Tohru Ohsawa successfully performed an intrathoracic esophagejejunostomy through the thoracoabdominal route on a 52-year-old male. It was the first case of an anastomosis between the intrathoracic esophagus and the intra-abdominal digestive tract. #CTSurgery

On this day in 1968, Norman Shumway performed the first successful heart transplant in the US at Stanford. The receipient was a 54 yo steel worker, and lived for 14 days. The landmark operation created a burst of enthusiasm for heart transplantation. #CTSurgery

On this day in 1979, Terence English performed the first successful heart transplant in the UK. The recipient was a 52 yo builder from London. He was a smoker with peripheral vascular disease and a duodenal cancer. He lived more than 5 years post transplant. #CTSurgery

On this day in 1964, James Hardy transplanted the heart of a chimpanzee into Boyd Rush. Hardy used a defibrillator to shock the heart. It restarted beating for 60 to 90 minutes (sources differ), but he unfortunately passed away without regaining consciousness. #CTSurgery

On this day in 1965, the first STS annual meeting was held at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis. 26 scientific papers were presented (12 on adult cardiac, 12 on general thoracic, and 1 on CHD and transplantation). Registration was $10, and 411 people attended. #CTSurgery

On this day in 1964, it is regarded that Kolesov, a Russian pioneer, was the first surgeon to perform a successful coronary bypass operation using suture anastomosis between RIMA and the RCA. #CTSurgery

On Feb 29 in 2020, Chen Jingyu performed the world's first double-lung transplant for a COVID-19 infected patient in Wuxi People's Hospital, Jiangsu Province. #CTSurgery
