Excellent speech by Steve Glazer, who has been gutsy, persistent & farsighted in his efforts to save local news. At minute 11 he rebuts the criticisms, including the absurd idea that this effort to create more local reporting jobs is a jobs killer. sd07.senate.ca.gov/video/senator-…

From @steve_Glazer's keynote on the future of Journalism at the Capitol Weekly forum: 'The foundation of our democracy has always rested in freedom of the press: People are led to authoritarian rule when the flow of information is limited.'

These platforms should pause for a moment and think about how they would do if our democracy went away. Would they be nationalized like industries have been in those circumstances? They should want to invest in democracy!

Using their platform to promote a lie underscores the need to have vibrant independent journalism that can provide facts so people can decide for themselves. Without it, these private platforms will control information flow, the bulwark against authoritarian rule.

“But if the goal is to revive local journalism, it’s penny wise and pound-foolish to prioritize Google grants over policies that would produce far more revenue, newsroom jobs and independence.” -Editor and Publisher ⁦Brier Dudley⁩ ⁦Buffy Wicks⁩ editorandpublisher.com/stories/dont-l…

More than 65% of journalists have lost their jobs since 2005. A rescue plan is critical to save independent news - which sustains our democracy. We cannot rely on the charity of digital platforms and their artificial news to inform our citizenry.
