I closed a two days annual conference for artisanal & small scale miners at @Hotel Africana. It attracted miners from various parts of Uganda. Present also were leaders of the mining industry from Kenya. .. 1/3

I expressed concern over lack of a government program to support the artisanal miners yet the sector employs 2 million people. The government deliberately makes it hard for them to acquire licences & chooses to support large scale miners many of whom are foreign investors. 2/3

I expressed concern over lack of banks in mining areas like Kasanda & Buhweju where gold dealers move with lots of cash making the business risky as well as few people connected to the regime taking over gold business & monopolizing it. I pledged my support to the miners! 3/3

A number of issues that need gov't intervention came up, such as the need for mapping & disclosure of all areas that have minerals in the country. People who have minerals in their land should know. It shouldn't be information just known by government officials... 2/3.
