Since October 7th, I've joined protests, fundraising events for Gaza, and students on campuses.

As a Jew and someone who has a ton of friends and family in Israel, I want to share some thoughts on claims of antisemitism in the movement and student encampments:

In his letter from Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr., told us the white moderate “is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice” and said this is someone who “prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”

The lesson of literally almost every single successful social movement in modern US history (women’s suffrage, civil rights, LGBTQ, Act-UP, antiwar, disability rights, etc) is that dissent *must* produce disorder to provoke the kind of response that enables meaningful change.

I don't agree with every slogan of the protests on campus + elsewhere. Some I really dislike. But when people look back they will see this as the moment when a real debate began about university + govt complicity in the oppression of Palestinians. And the protests made it happen.

For personal and professional reasons, I haven't been vocal about Palestine on this platform. But after yesterday, I want to make a few things clear for the record. (1/6)
