'What an artist dies in me' allegedly said #Roman Emperor Nero upon committing suicide #OTD AD68. The 5th emperor of Rome, his death marked the end of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty. The Senate proclaimed him a public enemy. On 9 June AD53 he married his 1st wife Claudia Octavia.

Cassius Dio mentions of the #Roman Emperor Caracalla that 'he also invented a costume of his own, which was made in a rather foreign fashion out of small pieces of cloth sewed together into a kind of cloak.' This was called a Caracallus from where we get the nickname Caracalla.

The #Roman Emperor #Geta who was briefly co-Emperor with his brother, Caracalla, was described in the Historia Augusta as 'handsome, brusque in his manners though not disrespectful, incontinent in love, gluttonous, and a lover of food and wine variously spiced'.

Claudia Octavia, daughter of #Roman Emperor Claudius & wife of Emperor Nero, was killed on 8th June AD62, aged 22. Nero had banished her after his future wife, Poppaea became pregnant. Octavia was popular & people protested for her return so Nero had her killed.

#BehindTheScenesMW look at the process of conservation of the Synton Hoard. The hoard consists of 228 #Roman coins, 1st - 2nd C AD. They depict Roman emperors & empresses from Vespasian to Commodus. Discovered on Synton Hill in the Scottish Borders in 2011.

The Eastern Roman Emperor, Theodosius II, married Aelia Eudocia on 7th June AD421. She was 20 & he was 19. She was born in Athens & upon marrying, converted to Christianity. She was later declared a saint. The mosaic of her is from the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, Bulgaria

This ceramic pot was found at the #Roman fort at #Inchtuthil in #Perthshire , #Scotland . It arrived from Gaul ( #France ) cAD82-87. This type is known as mica-dusted eggshell ware & was a high quality object for Roman Officers to use.

Cassius Dio described the #Roman Emperor Septimius #Severus as being 'small of stature but powerful...mentally he was very keen and very vigorous.Towards friends not forgetful, to enemies most oppressive.' Severus visited #Trimontium in 208AD on a new attempt to conquer Caledonia

The Ludi Piscatori was celebrated in honour of Father Tiber by the fishermen of Rome.
All fish that were caught on this day were sacrificed to Vulcan in his temple, located on the slopes of the Capitoline Hill. According to Ovid the celebrations took place in Campus Martius.

Celebrating Galen of Pergamon! He studied in Alexandria, treated gladiators, and settled in Rome in 162 A.D. Galen advanced medical knowledge with his theories on the brain, surgeries, and by identifying differences in blood. His work influenced medicine until the 1500s!

This Roman bronze figure of Jupiter was found in #Hungary & is now in British Museum The detailing of the face is exquisite & is thought to have inspired the design for the 1896 Olympics winner medals (pictured). This statue dates to the 1st-2nd century AD and is 17.7 cm high.

Didius Julianus was #Roman Emperor briefly from March-June 193AD when the Senate sentenced him to death and named Septimius Severus Emperor. According to Cassius Dio, Julianus was killed amid 'a shameful scene of tears' asking 'But what evil have I done? Whom have I killed?'
