universities: teach better! research more! support students more! do more! be better!

also universities: no sorry we simply can't provide you with a quiet, private space to do all of those things. we just don't have the space or money.

👀👀👀 Basically, all those 'impossible' and 'utopian' demands appear to be... realistic? When management has no choice but concede?

Tim Clement-Jones, the Senior Executive Team is isolating Queen Mary University of London ever more in their intransigency.

UPDATE: UoA chiefs last met with UCU negotiators on Thurs, who offered to stand down from local strikes (and apply to withdraw from national action) in exchange for 50% of MAB deductions being returned.

Management said they would consider proposal- but have yet to respond-

The future of academia means… financialized real estate, not secure staff and affordable places for students. Sometimes it is useful when they say the quiet part out loud.

As junior doctors and consultants strike in England this week, please remember who is really to blame.

The Government could have resolved this a long time ago, just like it was resolved in Scotland.

But they have refused to even try.

Ready for some mental gymnastics this morning?

Here’s Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan blaming Just Stop Oil for ruining students’ futures

Because if they protest on behalf of Just Stop Oil

Her Govt’s new authoritarian protest bill could leave them with a criminal record.

🚨 An “attempted mass suicide” took place at the UK’s largest immigration removal centre in March.

The full horrors of the incident are laid bare in papers released by the Home Office to Liberty Investigates and openDemocracy under FOI laws ⤵️

Yes we cut ALL the language programs. All of them. The new Chick-fil-a is going into the English Department’s old space.

This is so incredibly sad. Because he survived what was clearly a brutal attack the police tried to criminalise Alfie Meadows *three times* to cover their tracks. 13 years later he has some justice.

Today it was revealed that Labour have dropped their pledge to ban Zero Hours Contracts.

Just 4 days ago, Labour Deputy leader Angela Rayner told the TUC conference that Labour would ban Zero Hours Contracts.

Four days.

The trick here is to take away all other aspects of academic staff roles first. Then, taking their office is a fairly trivial step and will face little resistance.

Lol, 'rebuild trust'. Management will learn the hard way that you can have an authoritarian regime, or you can have a university, but not both. The 'customers' eventually find out which one you are selling.

I think University of Aberdeen students deserve to know why senior management declined to return partial pay deductions to UCU members, now that MAB is over.

That decision would have provided an opportunity for the semester to get off on the right foot- instead, strikes are back in full.

Important thread given Alfie Meadows case. We saw major miscarriages of justice at the same time (the CPS went after Alfie three times for surviving and to save face for the police).

The head of the CPS was…Keir Starmer.

The way managers in HE jump onto hot-desking neatly encapsulates 'leadership' in HE:
- proven counterproductive a decade ago
- 'cost-cutting' without realising what the actual job is (where meet students? Where WRITE?)
- bland approach w/o attention to department particular needs

🚨Please urgently send to University of Manchester UCU UMUCU.🚨

Members face extreme punitive deductions of 50% for the MAB period.

Members voted 70% against an offer to reduce this to 33%, and are striking from next week.
