Snorkelling has given me a greater appreciation for fish, which are too often dismissed as 'stocks', with little value unless being eaten. These are pollack, incredibly curious animals who like to approach to see what's going on...

Biodiversiy is declining, yet we have limited knowledge about how that affects human well-being. My work linking bats, insecticide use, and human infant health is out today in Science (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…), and tells a complex story about how those are connected.

Israel has dropped almost 80,000 tons of explosives - this means that Israel has dropped ~36 kilograms of explosives on Gaza for every man, woman, and child. Each red dot shows a bombed place in Gaza. (UN Satellite Centre, July 6th) This is what genocide looks like.

Notice how they never plot the acreage of old growth forest, the cover of coral reefs, the butterfly migrations, salmon runs, passenger pigeons… I wonder if they really believe those things don’t relate to our quality of life or if they just rationalize their loss to cope.

Communications and internet completely cut off in southern and central Gaza. In the last 11 months the Israeli army has destroyed almost all communication infrastructures in Gaza as part of its war of annihilation. Genocide in the dark.

Its a sad day in Miami, as Aguacate Sanctuary closes its gates. I’m grateful to have spent the past year volunteering here. I know the animals are going to good places (I’ve helped transport a couple), but I will miss being so close to them… this guy in particular.
