The poem The Lark Ascending by George Meredith inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams to write a musical work of the same name. It remains one of the best-known and most popular pieces of classical music in the UK.

During the time that Ralph Vaughan Williams lived in Cheyne Walk in Chelsea he wrote both the Lark Ascending and the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis

Apparently he lived at number 13 which is somewhat impossible to find!

When he was studying in Paris in 1900, Gerald Festus Kelly was introduced to the work of John Singer Sargent. Six decades later, his technique was still having a strong influence on Kelly's portraiture; shown in this superb picture of Ralph Vaughan Williams from 1961.
