We shd understand why post truth populists have come about - this means understanding our crisis of trust and what we've done wrong to make millions of citizens find their political institutions opaque or evil. But, understanding them comes second; opposing them comes first. 4/x

We know how to deal with liar politicians, but not with post truth populists. Liars obscure particular truths, but post truth populists enter a co-conspiracy with citizens in which both parties agree that politicians can obscure the difference between truth and lies itself. 3/x

Post truth populists degrade the fabric of democracy, because the fabric requires not only compliance with rules but sustenance of democratic norms and rituals. The latter only remain sacred until we stop, enough times, treating them as sacred. 2/x

Raise your standard for how you expect a politician to treat you. Don’t tolerate post-truth lies or entrepreneurial surfing of public opinion. If you do, you’re entering into a co-conspiracy with the politician in which neither of you treat the other seriously.
