O-STEAM fellows kicked off their weeklong fellowship with a bioacoustic analysis of dolphin data. The data comes from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) researcher Laela Sayigh’s lab. Fellows also built a drifter they’ll deploy later this week to track ocean currents. NOAA Sea Grant

The students have analyzed dolphin vocalizations while building their own hydrophones. Today, they tested their devices in a test tank and beach on Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)’s campus. They also explored chemical oceanography and water quality testing with WHOI Sea Grant’s Jennie Rheuban. @seagrant
O-STEAM fellows towed their hydrophones at Waquoit Bay NERR, learned about traditional ecological knowledge from Kitty Hndricks (Mashpee Wampanoag tribe), and identified the dolphins they’ve been studying during the week by working with their acoustic data. @whoi NOAA Sea Grant
