I respect Joe Root hugely. But for England to want 18 counties and 150,000 spectators and 350 pros to abandon the T20 Blast for 50-over cricket to make up for the fact England players don't play any 50 over cricket because they want to play The Hundred is classic double think

Joe Root calls for the Blast to give way. It makes most of the money for Yorkshire. His county. The county that nurtured him. One of the oldest, greatest cricket clubs in the world (and yes I am aware of their problems in recent years). It is disappointing

There is something wonderful about Ken Kelly's study of Bishan Bedi bowling in the nets before the 1st Test at Edgbaston in July 1979. It is one of my favoutites (also of Kelly's) and captures the elegance and poise of a master as he prepares to bowl

Thinking about those end-of-year lists that news orgs do of “10 flashpoints that could turn to war” for the coming year. I guess for 2023/4 the correct answer was “all of them”

Essays by Labour MPs in 1969 about Israel.

They call Israel 'the world's most effective democracy' & 'a laboratory of social democracy'.

Whereas, 'the ignorant young demagogues of the New Left who echo hate-charged slogans [against Israel] contribute nothing to socialism'.

I did not realise the whole pumpkin picking phenomenon was coming to a field where people have placed pumpkins to pick them up. We are quite, quite mad.

Sorry to report that on a visit to the National Portrait Gallery yesterday, I could find no portraits of either Stanley Baldwin or Alec Douglas-Home.

That £41 million refurbishment has just been a cover for woke attempts to cancel Britain's leading 20th-century heroes.

Tim Davie’s attendance at the 1922 committee next week has some precedent: as BBC DG Alasdair Milne appeared before it in 1982 to defend the Corporation’s coverage during the Falklands War. The meeting descended into a shouting match.

A lot happened, of course, in two particular months last year when Sunak wasn't in charge of economic policy.

I love the Trussites. Like the Bourbons, in their exile, they have learnt nothing and forgotten nothing.

From earlier in the year. Quite a lot of Tory MPs were convinced they were going to win in 1997. economist.com/britain/2023/0…
