BIKE BUS: Former active travel minister Trudy Harrison said when you ask in schools, how many kids cycle to school: no hands go up. Yet when you ask how many would like to cycle to school: all the hands go up. Here’s what happens when you make it possible with a 🚲🎶🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🙌🏻

Something TERRIBLE happened to the streets in and we need to talk about it!

🧐 Why did LEGO decide to WIDEN the streets?
🚙 What does it teach us about real ?
🛣️ And how can we change it?

And the transformation of Paris into a city for people not cars continues - and a great (French) quote, a reminder that the domination of our cities’ great public squares and avenues by vehicles is a historical moment that can and will pass.

This makes for intriguing - if rather depressing reading - on where opposition to Wales default 20mph limit is driven not by local people but by those looking to score political points many miles away. 20s plenty and has long attracted cross-party consensus as it makes sense.

Interesting new “Report on Motoring” from The RAC. Its research finds:

- Staggering 30% of drivers aged 17-24 admit to making video calls while driving

- 49% of drivers cite biggest concern is condition of local roads, high scores for poor driving/road safety

- 55%,

If 5 people a day were killed by trains or airplanes, would we call a campaign to make them safer a 'war on train drivers or pilots'? 20mph is only being set in built up areas where people mix with motors. where people live, work, play, shop and learn

I'm a motorist & I don't feel like a victim of war.

When I'm on my bike I do.
When I'm walking I do.
When I nervously let my kids go to the park by themselves I do.

Sunak and co. need to remember that there are millions of us out here that are more than drivers.

Along with fellow Active Travel Commissioners Ed Clancy OBE, Dame Sarah Storey & simonobtv, I've written to Rishi Sunak about the Plan for Drivers.

We believe the most effective plan for drivers will be to get right behind the Government’s own Gear Change plan.

Here's why 🧵👇

On Sunday, I opened a wonderful, 4km stretch of the Bee Network with Dame Sarah Storey Tellingly, not once did we worry about her kids, who were away from traffic for every bit of the trip. Here's my speech from the day, which shows why this is so important for EVERY road user...

This is city traffic (Cardiff this morning). Why wouldn’t we help those who want to walk & cycle? As you can see, cars already can’t move! What benefit is there to attracting more?

Dear Mark Harper There is only one 'blanket 20mph limit' local authority in the whole of the UK and its in the City of Westminster covering all their roads, including the 'A' road outside Houses of Parliament. Put there by Conservatives to protect MP and government staff.

Our PM should be 'standing up' for children, not motorists! Children's health is in a dire state. They are killed and injured every day on the roads. Unsafe streets = inactive, unhappy, isolated kids. This should be the focus.

Sobering and unacceptable stats. And an appropriate time to remember that a person hit by a vehicle being driven at 30mph is x5 more likely to die than one doing 20mph

Politicians seem to split into two types. The ones thinking about the next election, or the ones thinking about the next generation. Look beyond the populist rhetoric and you will see who cares about your children and their future.

The UK govt will ‘look at preventing the introduction of the '15-minute city' - where essential amenities are always within a 15-minute walk’

If true this is becoming dangerously farcical - conspiracy theorists’ nonsense being elevated into govt policy.

It is very sad that a policy in the interests of people can lead to a vote of no confidence. The right thing is not always the easy thing. 20mph is much safer for our communities bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-…
