Failure to swiftly prevent a frontal assault on El Fasher may overwhelm the strained humanitarian response and trigger genocidal escalation in Sudan's conflict.

'Togo president seeks to extend family rule into seventh decade.' 7 decades. And the only concern Washington has raised is on the procedural way in which this was executed, not on the precedent it sets. ft.com/content/aff267…

I sort of get DRC military spending, but South Sudan increasing their military spending by 78% last year to over $1 billion is criminal. Coming in the lead up to elections this year should be a warning. news24.com/news24/africa/…

'Facing no pressure, the generals escalate their war again.' This title says it all. Yes, I hold the parties responsible for escalating the war; and their backers for enabling it. But lets not forget the international community's crime of doing nothing. africa-confidential.com/article-previe…

'The RSF are reportedly encircling El Fasher, suggesting a coordinated move to attack the city may be imminent. Simultaneously, the Sudanese Armed Forces appear to be positioning themselves.' The UN's warning today and yet no Security Council meeting. un.org/sg/en/content/…

What people are not realizing is that the US troops in etc were not deployed on different missions. Its all the same (CT) mission playing out across a transnational theatre.

Incidentally, an interesting conversation next month for Biden with Kenyan President Ruto during his state visit might be stopping the transshipment of weapons to the RSF via Nairobi. If I was a young NSC staffer I might want to include that in the read ahead memo and TPs...

Extremely troubling that despite the international outcry around the imminent RSF assault on El Fasher or the outcry over the UAE's continued arming of the RSF, that the UAE as of YESTERDAY was continuing to resupply the RSF via Chad--with the cargo plane being used turning off…

I think its premature to call this a blow to Africa policy. If the US takes a unilateral decision to temporarily drawdown >100 troops >2 weeks before Deby's election in Chad, given what has happened in Niger, seems more like more a moment to re-evaluate. nytimes.com/2024/04/25/us/…

My interview today on الجزيرة مباشر starting at 8:00 where I argue that we need to think more broadly about what mediation means for . There is no indication on the ground that either side wants to talk face to face and as long as they are supplied their guns do the talking.

An excellent study of South African politics today and the revisiting of Mandela's legacy. A great primer for understanding next month's elections there. ft.com/content/2bfe3b…

Each side in 's war has seemingly easy access to the latest military hardware. And there isnt even a whisper of discussion about expanding the UN arms embargo. If we think that Jeddah talks will advance peace as weapons continue to flow, we need to think again.

People dont put enough weight or consideration behind how bureaucratic culture effects policy outcomes in Washington. This anecdote says a lot about both places and tracks with my experiences.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee hosting a hearing next week on the humanitarian emergency in with U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello. They will want to hear what the US strategy is to avert disaster in Sudan and end the war. A tall order given fast moving events.
