President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, outlawing the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting, #OTD in 1965.

#OTD in 1965, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed into law. It expanded voting rights and ensured that states followed the 15th Amendment’s guarantee that the right to vote would not be denied because of race. 59 years later, the fight for our voting rights continues. ✊🏾🧵
