Since avg PM&R residency interview invite rates have been on the decline, it's important to look at how best to use the new tools AAMC has given applicants (program signals + geographic preferences) to improve their chances of getting interviews. (2/10) #Physiatry #Match2025

Signals can be used by applicants to express particular interest in selected residency programs when applicants submit their ERAS apps. For #Match2025, PM&R applicants get 8 signals, and 110 out of 111 PM&R programs are participating in program signaling. (3/10) #Physiatry

On ERAS, residency applicants can pick Geographic Preferences of up to 3 divisions + Setting Prefs of urban, suburban, or rural. The # of PM&R residencies varies between divisions, with the most in Mid Atlantic (29) + the least in New England (4). (4/10) #Physiatry #Match2025

Programs see geographic preferences differently depending on your choice! If your pref aligns w/ program's location or you chose no pref, program sees pref + explanation. If your pref doesn't align or you skipped the question, program sees nothing. (5/10) #Physiatry #Match2025

For #Match2024, PM&R residencies were more likely to send interview invites to applicants who signaled (43%) vs who didn't (11%). Both category rates declined from #Match2023, which reflects the overall decrease in invite rates between these cycles. (6/10) #Physiatry #Match2025

For #Match2024, PM&R residencies were more likely to send interview invites to applicants with geographic preferences that align with their program location (23%), though not to the same degree as they did for applicants who signaled them (43%). (7/10) #Physiatry #Match2025

There's HUGE variability in how each PM&R program sent interview invites to applicants who signaled them (most between 19-74%). There also wasn't much difference in how programs saw applicants with no geographic preference vs misaligned preferences. (8/10) #Physiatry #Match2025
