(((Dan Hodges))) There is a fix, but it will lead to a lot of establishment and international blowback. Needs a law stating that nobody arriving illegally gets to stay, standard offshore processing in a UK overseas territory, withdrawal from ECHR (as May once suggested). All difficult but doable.

Just a reminder that UK banks already pay an 8% surcharge over and above the current 19% corporation tax. So they currently pay 27% on UK profits and next year they will pay 28%. Weirdly, this is rarely mentioned…

Then all the clever people looked shocked when the hoi polloi decided to blow up a system that had so manifestly failed them. The middle class of course hated the idea that they might need to pay more for their coffees and car washes.

Nearly all that growth was down to migration - most of it low skilled. So we shouldn't be shocked that productivity failed to rise. Why would any company have invested in plant or training when they could just hire another minimum wage worker.

That's exactly what they did.

With our flexible labour markets we became employer of last resort for the whole of the EU which was great for them with their screwed up currency block. It also ensured with no labour market tightness that wages for the bottom never rose.

Consult the figures.
Two years ago Ireland was 5 points below the EU Average Standard of Living. It is now 10 points below.

Congrats to Rishi Sunak on becoming the UK's first ethnic minority PM for well over 150 years, a real watershed moment for modern Britain which will set an example for the rest of the democratic world. Good luck over the coming weeks and years, we all need you to succeed.

Dan Salt The magic of normal interest rates. Tax income only make up 45% of France 2023 budget. The rest is debt. Let that sink in

Hector in the sky without diamonds Alex Balfour It’s not undemocatic, it’s just different. FPTP recognises the vast difference between parts of the country. That people in northern Scotland have different needs to those in Kent. FPTP ensures those in more remote places have a fairer say in how the country works.

You can very easily flip this. It is central to Remainer thinking that Britain’s economic fortunes were transformed by joining Europe. But they weren’t. Growth 1945-73 was fine. It wasn’t fine 73-79. *Europe* wasn’t—and isn’t—the central problem or solution. That’s closer to home

To the cabbages calling for PR in the UK; just look at Denmark. The current ‘social democrat’ government has passed over 100 Acts against minorities. They could only get elected by becoming anti-immigrant. Some aspects feel like Germany 1930s! PR in Britain - no thanks!

One of my cousins, and my nieces partner both work for Royal Mail, they’re both on strike this week, neither of them want to go on strike. They both will tho, as they fear the repercussions from crossing a picket line .. labour, supporting bullying in the workplace
