I can’t begin to process what has been happening for the past two weeks but it all feels so weirdly… joyful.

The depressed person's mind blocks you from having joy. It tells you you're not worthy of happiness, that you *should* be feeling miserable because of... and then it makes up a reason. If that's you, please know it's a lie. You're being lied to. You deserve that joy.

Popped into Galena, Illinois today for all things Ulysses S. Grant! The Grant home was worth the visit. The Grant family lived there after the Civil War. The home was donated by his family to the city. Now maintained by the state, it is 90% original! So many incredible artifacts.

In Grant Park in Galena, IL, was this Blakely field cannon. Read the plaque and you’ll learn it was at Ft. Sumter… on April 12, 1861. It was part of the first engagement of the Civil War. It stayed in Confederate hands until found by Sherman’s troops in South Carolina in 1865.

There is also #WWI history! This 1913 Krupp Howitzer also sits in Grant Park. 1924 legislation had German war trophies picked up by Doughboys distributed to states based off the number of men they had sent to the war.

This past weekend I covered 775 miles in one last Midwestern hurrah. Iowa, bits of Illinois and even Wisconsin, ending with a gorgeous drive up a stretch of the Mississippi River. This upcoming weekend is all things Minnesota, because next week I make the permanent move to 🇨🇦
