My ideal pitch, in this order, is: 1. Sample hed/dek: if you can't figure this out, you have a topic not a story 2. Nut graph: The 5 W's, emphasis on the WHY ARE TELLING THIS STORY NOW (superlatives, global appeal, new take, timely news, etc). 3. Bio/clips That's it.

It’s easy to treat the media as a punching bag. But look to the nation’s local newsrooms. For little money or recognition, reporters in 2023 stood up to power brokers who tried to bully them into silence, exposed corrupt officials and even saved lives. Proof, from every state:

Being a general assignment reporter is going to a ribbon cutting and investigating the local jail and tracking down a 105-year-old woman and learning about the art of mural painting and writing a column about Mothman and smelling artisan soaps and going bowling all in one month.

I am rocking (NOT with the Rock Lobsters) but with THE NIGHT OWLS for the @AthensProHockey team name. I think the name matches the city perfectly, and I even flexed the ole and slightly above average (only because of Amanda Bright) graphic design muscle to whip up a logo.
