#OTD, 250 years ago, the First Continental Congress met in Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia, where delegates from the colonies debated and agreed upon a Bill of Rights, Articles of Association, and a petition outlining American grievances to George III. #RevWar

#OTD, 9/8/1781, the Battle of Eutaw Springs occurred in South Carolina, resulting in a strategic American victory. For his leadership at the battle, Congress awarded Gen. Nathanael Greene a gold medal. This bronze medal from our museum collections is a restrike of the original.

Last week, Dr. Eli Merritt of Vanderbilt University was awarded the 2024 Society of the Cincinnati Prize for his book, Disunion Among Ourselves: The Perilous Politics of the American Revolution (University of Missouri Press 2023). You can now watch a recording of the event at: bit.ly/4d3khx4

#OTD took place one of the largest military actions of the Rev War...in Gibraltar? Thousands of troops & hundreds of ships from France and Spain combined to attack the British territory on Sept. 13, 1782. All would be for naught; the British would hold on and keep the territory.
