From the June 19, 1911 issue of the [Fairbanks] Weekly Alaska Citizen, the editor argued that Alaska needed stricter gun control, that enforced bans on concealed carry “would amply safeguard the general public against the coward that ‘packs a gat.’” #alaskahistory #alaska

Circa 1968 Speakeasy restaurant and old-timey theater in Fairbanks on First Ave. Seemingly no relation to the 1970s hotel bar of the same name. Via Anchorage Museum. #alaskahistory #alaska

Don't forget my free lecture at the Bear Tooth this Saturday the 14th. Doors open at 10:30. I'll probably play a medley of jingles before the talk. Don't you want to be part of a Twin Dragon Mongolian BBQ singalong? "Can we cook up something fresh just for you . . ."

1985 anti-seat belt law letters published in Anchorage Daily News, 3 of many. Arguments might seem familiar, like "Saving lives is not sufficient justification for any law." AK seat belt law went into effect on Sep 12, 1990 though primary enforcement didn't happen until 2006.

2016 "Alaska" commercial for Dodge's AWD cars. "There's a place in America where you can almost see Russia." Apparently unknown to Dodge, there's also places where you can see it. It's fascinating when advertising agencies make choices like this. #alaskahistory #alaska

Hope to see a bunch of you tomorrow at my free talk on Alaska in movies at the Bear Tooth. I just added material on what things were used to imitate snow in old movies, plus footage from 1899.

Circa 1924, guide Roy Gilley leading a group through the Katmai region, in forests killed by the massive 1912 Novarupta eruption that created the Katmai caldera. If it's the right trip, this group including crew making a movie. Via Anchorage Museum. #alaskahistory #alaska

"Totem pole" in Anchorage's Brown's Point Park, actually a Boy Scout-carved telephone pole. The Anchorage area indigenous population--the Dena'ina--do not carve totems, something to think about given all the poles around town. #alaskahistory #anchoragehistory

Circa 1950s/60s Lindgren-Turner decal of Alaska. This Spokane-based company made similar colorful stickers for states, national parks, monuments, and cities that were common gift shop and truck stop fodder for decades. #alaskahistory #alaska
